Methamphetamine has a notably long half-life for a stimulant, roughly 10 to 12 hours, meaning it takes that long for the body to clear half the drug. That’s significantly longer than cocaine’s roughly one-hour half-life, which is a major reason methamphetamine’s effects and detection window both last longer. The liver metabolizes a portion of methamphetamine into amphetamine, while a substantial share of the original drug is also excreted unchanged in urine.
Meth Detection Windows by Test Type
Urine Test
The most common testing method. Standard use is generally detectable for 3 to 5 days, extending to about a week with heavy or chronic use.
Blood Test
Blood tests typically detect methamphetamine for 1 to 3 days after use, a shorter window than urine but longer than many other stimulants.
Saliva Test
Saliva testing generally detects methamphetamine for about 1 to 4 days, useful for confirming relatively recent use.
Hair Follicle Test
Hair testing has by far the longest window, potentially detecting methamphetamine use for up to about 90 days as the drug becomes trapped in the hair shaft during growth.
Factors That Affect How Long Meth Stays in Your System
- Frequency and amount of use. Heavier, more frequent use extends detection windows across every test type.
- Metabolism and kidney function. Since a large share of methamphetamine is cleared unchanged through the kidneys, kidney health directly affects clearance speed.
- Urine pH. Methamphetamine clears faster in more acidic urine and more slowly in more alkaline urine, a somewhat unusual factor compared to most other drugs.
- Route of use. Smoking, snorting, and injecting produce different absorption patterns, which can subtly affect elimination timing.
- Body composition and hydration. Body fat percentage and hydration level both influence how quickly the drug and its metabolites clear the body.
